Erlotinib is a drug that is used to treat several types of cancers and prevent the spread of tumors. It reversibly binds to the intracellular tyrosine kinase ATP binding region of the epidermal growth factor receptor and acts as an inhibitor to prevent ATP from binding to the receptor at its site. This binding prevents 2 downstream signaling pathways which inhibits further cancer cell differentiation and can lead to apoptosis of cells as well. This drug is indicated to treat metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with tumors showing epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) exon 19 deletions or exon 21 (L858R) substitution mutations. This drug is administered as an oral tablet.
