Iloprost is a prostacyclin analog also known as Ventavis, that acts to prevent platelet aggregation. It is a second-generation analog that is structurally similar to prostacyclin. It binds to prostacyclin receptors that activate adenylyl cyclase which elevates cAMP concentration levels. High levels of cAMP inhibit platelet activation and aggregation which helps to prolong bleeding time. It is rapidly absorbed and metabolized via beta-oxidation. If an overdose does occur the patient may present symptoms of hypotension, headache, flushing, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
