Nizatidine is an H2 Histamine receptor antagonist used to treat acid reflux disorders and a variety of ulcers. Nizatidine is taken orally as a solution or a capsule. Once it is transported to gastric basolateral membrane of parietal cells in the stomach, it competitively inhibits H2 histamine receptors. Normally H2 histmaine receptors in parietal cells activate adenylate cyclase which catalyzes the reaction of ATP into cAMP. The accumulation of cAMP activates protein kynases which activate the H+/K+ ATPase. This transports hydrogen into the stomach lumen where it reacts with chloride to synthesize hydrochloric acid, a large component of gastric acid. The inhibition of this process decreases the gastric acid response to food, caffeine, insulin, betazole, or pentagastrin
